In the transfer of corrosive and ultra-pure
liquids, PTFE, PFA and PEEK tubing have become
the tubing material of choice. Chemical, pharmaceutical
and semiconductor processors cannot risk the use of
materials that could contribute impurities into process
fluids.
In chemical processing systems, PTFE
tubing is used throughout because of its inertness to
almost all chemical including nitric, sulfuric, and
phosphoric acids, even at high temperatures and high
concentrations.
In pharmaceutical processing systems,
PTFE and PFA are FDA-approved materialss offering inertness
and high-purity properties.
Solvents, acids, photoresist and ultra-pure
water are essential in the production of microeletronic
devices. Even trace amounts of mon-volatile or ionic
extractables measured in parts-per-billion can create
unacceptable yield levels in semiconductor processing.
PFA (perfluorokoxyalkane) tubing has emerged as the
tubing material of choice in the semiconductor processing
field because of its excellent chemical resistance and
extremely low extractables. For the most demanding cleanliness
applications, PFA-HG is gaining wide acceptance.
Where a rigid plastic fluid transfer
tube is needed, more and more designers are specifying
PEEK (polyetheretherketone) in their systems. For example,
PEEK tubing is now replacing PFA tubing in the pumping
of agents and chemicals from storage bottles. Because
they are rigid and can reach the bottom of the bottle
or tank, the processor is assured that they are using
the entire chemical available to them.

PTFE and PFA meet the biocompatibility
requirements for analytical systems, medical tools and
drug-delivery equipment. They are pure, smooth, non-toxic,
non-allergenic and compatible with human tissues and
fluids. It is important to note, however, that PTFE
and PFA are not approved for implantation. Biomedical
applications require special attention to purity , smoothness,
dimensions and cosmetics, which can be met by proper
quality control during manufacturing.
Improved cleaning, non-contaminating
and design-flexibility make PTFE and PFA ideal for pharmaceutical
manufacturing equipment. PTFE and PFA are inert to nearly
all fluids and prodice extremely low level of ion extractables.
The smoother inner bore of PFA prevents entrapment of
liquids in micro-pores and reduces purging times significantly.
PEEK polymer has successfully replaced
glass, stainless steel and other metals in medical devices
and bioanalytical systems. PEEK (polyetheretherketone)
